Before You Pay an AI Marketing Agency in India: 7 Questions to Ask First

If you run a salon, gym, clinic, or any small service business in India — you have probably started seeing ads. AI marketing agents. WhatsApp automation. Google ranking tools. Automatic booking systems.

Some of these are genuinely useful. Some are not.

And some will take a large payment from you before you understand what you actually bought.

In July and August 2026, Trustpilot reviews for an India-based AI marketing company included a customer who reported paying over ₹19,00,000 with no meaningful work completed after two months. Other reviews from the same period mention unresponsive account managers and refused refunds. That same company has a 4.6/5 overall rating across 113 reviews — meaning most customers are satisfied.

This is not a story about one company. This is a story about one question every small business owner needs to ask before signing up for any AI marketing service:

Do you know exactly what you are buying, who owns it, and what happens if you leave?

Here are seven questions to ask before you pay anyone.

Why “AI marketing” contracts go wrong for Indian service businesses

The problem is not always that the product doesn’t work. Often, it does.

The problem is that many small business owners sign up without fully understanding three things:

  1. Who owns the digital assets created on their behalf — the website, the domain, the Google listing
  2. What the exit looks like — what happens when you cancel, and what you keep
  3. How to verify the work was actually done

These three things are rarely in the sales call. They are in the contract.

Karo contract padhai se. Pehle questions poochhein.

Questions 1, 2, 3: Who owns the website, the domain, and the Google listing?

These are three separate ownership questions. Ask all three.

Question 1: Who owns the website?

Does the website live on your domain — like yoursalonname.in — or on the agency’s domain, like agency.com/your-salon?

A website on their domain gives you zero SEO value. If you leave them, the website disappears. You built nothing.

A website on your own domain stays with you — even if the relationship ends.

Question 2: Who owns the domain name?

The domain — yoursalonname.in or yoursalonname.com — is registered to someone. Find out whose name it is registered in.

Ask the agency: “If I cancel tomorrow, will you transfer the domain to me?”

If the answer is no or “we’ll discuss it later,” that is your answer.

Question 3: Who owns the Google Business Profile?

Your Google Business Profile is your business’s identity on Google Maps. It is the most important digital asset a local service business has.

An agency can manage your GBP for you — that is fine and useful. But they should never be the primary owner.

Ask: “Is my Google Business Profile under my Google account, or yours?”

If it is under their account, you lose access the moment you leave them.

Questions 4, 5: What is the exit? Lock-in, refunds, and what you keep

Most problems happen at the exit. Ask about it before you start.

Question 4: What is the contract length, and what is the penalty for leaving early?

Some agencies lock you in for six months, one year, or longer. Others charge a large upfront fee that is non-refundable.

There is nothing wrong with a three-month or six-month commitment — many results take time. But you should know going in.

Ask: “If I cancel after one month, what do I owe? What happens to the website, the domain, and the Google listing?”

Get the answers in writing, not on a call.

Question 5: What is the refund policy?

Two kinds of refund exist — and they are very different.

Time-based refund: You can cancel within X days and get your money back. This tells you the agency is confident their service works.

Performance-based refund: You get a refund if specific results are not achieved. These are harder to claim but mean the agency is accountable to outcomes.

Ask: “If I am not satisfied in the first 30 days, can I get a refund?”

If the answer is no refund under any circumstances, you are taking all the risk. They are taking none.

Questions 6, 7: How to verify the work was done

This is the most overlooked part. Even satisfied customers sometimes are not sure exactly what the agency did on their behalf.

Question 6: Can you show me a before-and-after of my Google Business Profile?

Real GBP work is visible. You can see it.

If an agency claims to have optimised your GBP, ask them to show you:

  • Screenshots of what it looked like when they started
  • What it looks like now
  • Your review count then vs now
  • Your rank position for key searches

If they cannot show you this clearly, the work may not have happened.

Question 7: Can I see my Google Search Console data?

Your website should have Google Search Console connected. It shows exactly how many people found your website through Google search, and which keywords brought them.

Ask: “Can you give me access to my Search Console account so I can see the traffic myself?”

If they say no, or say they use their own analytics system, be careful. Your data belongs to you.

Red flags: large upfront payment, verbal promises, no written scope

These three together are the clearest warning sign.

Large upfront payment. A one-time setup fee is normal — it covers the work to build your website, connect your GBP, set up your WhatsApp. Anything significantly above ₹25,000 as an upfront payment for a single-location business warrants detailed written deliverables before you pay.

Verbal promises.“Don’t worry, we will handle everything” is not a contract term. Get specific deliverables in writing: what will be done, by when, how success is measured.

No written scope. If the agreement is just a monthly fee with no list of what the agency does each month — you cannot verify whether the work happened.

Ek chiz yaad rakhein: agar likha nahi hai, toh hua nahi maana jata.

If it is not written, it does not count.

What a fair price actually looks like in India in 2026

Here is a rough honest range for Indian service businesses.

₹500 to ₹2,000/month: Software tools that automate specific tasks — WhatsApp replies, booking reminders, basic GBP. Usually software you configure yourself, or a very simple managed layer.

₹2,000 to ₹10,000/month: Fully managed service with a proper deliverables list — GBP optimisation, WhatsApp campaigns, website maintenance, monthly reporting. Reasonable if the scope is written clearly.

Above ₹10,000/month: Usually includes paid advertising management (Google Ads, Meta Ads). For a single-location salon, gym, or clinic, evaluate carefully whether you need this tier yet.

Setup fees: A one-time ₹10,000–₹25,000 setup fee for building a real website and connecting your systems is reasonable. You should receive all login credentials and own the domain.

A quick checklist before you sign

  • Website on my domain — not the agency’s domain
  • Domain registered in my name, or transferred to me on cancellation
  • Google Business Profile primary ownership under my Google account
  • Contract length and early exit terms in writing
  • Refund policy in writing
  • Monthly deliverables listed specifically — not just “AI marketing services”
  • I have direct access to Search Console / analytics data

If any box cannot be checked, ask the agency to address it before you sign.

Purpilot is built around these principles — ₹999/month, website on your own domain, cancel any time and keep the website, domain running until it expires on exit (moving it to your own registrar account is optional, ₹299 one-time processing fee), no commission on your bookings. Standard payment-processor fees apply. Not because it is generous. Because your digital assets should be yours.
