The Fake UPI Screenshot Scam Hitting Indian Salons and Gyms — And How to Stop It

A client pulls out their phone at your checkout counter. They show your staff a payment screenshot — ₹800 sent to your UPI ID (India's digital payment system), complete with your salon name in the details. Your staff nods. The appointment is confirmed. The client leaves.

Three hours later, you check your account. No payment arrived. The client is gone. The slot is gone. The ₹800 is gone.

How the fake UPI screenshot scam works

Fraudsters use apps designed specifically to generate fake payment screenshots. These apps let the scammer enter any amount, any UPI ID, any merchant name, and generate a screenshot that looks identical to a real PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm confirmation screen — right down to the transaction ID and timestamp.

Some scammers go further. They use counterfeit UPI apps that actually mimic the official payment app interface on screen, including an animated “Payment Successful” sound. Your staff sees the animation, hears the sound, and assumes the money came through.

No money ever left the fraudster's account. No transaction was initiated. The entire confirmation was generated by an app designed to deceive.

PhonePe's own security guidance for merchants states this directly: “A scammer may show a fake payment confirmation screen, send a fabricated screenshot, or use a counterfeit UPI application that mimics genuine payment apps.” Victims “see what appears to be a genuine payment confirmation and hand over goods, services, or cash” — and discover the payment was never made when they check their bank.

Why salons, gyms, and clinics are the main targets

Your front desk is designed to move fast. A stylist finishes a client, the next one is waiting. The receptionist is on a call. Three people are standing at the counter at 6 PM on a Saturday.

In that environment, checking a bank SMS for every UPI payment is not the priority. Seeing the screen, logging the booking, and moving to the next client — that is the priority. Scammers know this. They time their visits for exactly these busy moments.

Service businesses are also targeted because the “product” — a haircut, a gym session, a consultation — is delivered immediately and cannot be reclaimed. A shopkeeper selling a physical item can sometimes recover it. Once your stylist has done the blowout, you cannot undo it.

The four things your staff must never trust

Train your team on this. Write it next to the payment terminal if you need to.

Never trust a screenshot on someone else's phone. A payment confirmation shown on the customer's device means nothing. Screenshots are trivial to fake.

Never trust a payment sound or animation. The “success” chime and green checkmark animation can both be generated by counterfeit apps without any actual payment.

Never trust a transaction ID from the customer. Fake apps generate realistic-looking transaction IDs. You cannot verify a transaction ID by looking at it.

Never trust “check later, I'm in a hurry.” This is the most common pressure line scammers use. The urgency is manufactured. The one who is in a hurry is the person who needs to leave before you verify.

The one rule that stops 100% of fake UPI fraud at your counter

You check your own bank. Not their screen. Your bank.

Open your banking app, your UPI app, or wait for the SMS credit alert on your own phone. If the credit notification does not appear within 30 to 60 seconds, the payment did not happen.

This one rule eliminates every fake UPI scam variant — screenshot frauds, counterfeit apps, fake sounds, and “it's pending” delays. You are verifying payment against your own account record, not against what someone shows you on their device.

The policy for your counter: service starts after payment appears in your account. Not before. No exceptions for regulars, for walk-ins, for busy evenings, for anyone.

What to do if your staff has already been cheated

File a complaint immediately at cybercrime.gov.in — India's National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. Include the date, the approximate time, and any description of the person you can provide. If there is CCTV footage at your counter, save it.

Also file a complaint at your local police station. Cyber fraud cases involving fake UPI transactions are being actively pursued in most cities. Your complaint contributes to building the record against repeat scammers.

Staff ko blame mat karo. If they were not explicitly trained to check their own bank for every payment, this is a gap in the process, not a gap in the person. Fix the process.

How to train your team in 10 minutes

Gather your front desk staff. Show them this page or explain the scam in three sentences: fake apps generate convincing payment screens. No money actually moves. You only confirm payment by checking your own bank app — not their phone.

Then run one practice scenario. Have someone show you a payment confirmation on their phone. Walk through exactly what your staff does: put that phone down, open your banking app, check your recent transactions. If the credit is there — confirm. If not — “Please wait while we verify.”

Post a small note near your payment terminal: “Payment confirmed only after we see it in our account. Thank you for your patience.” Most genuine clients will find this completely reasonable. The only client who will push back is the one with a fake screenshot.

A better way: no booking is confirmed until the money is in your account

The safest version of this is when the booking is confirmed only after the payment is in your own account — so no staff member ever has to judge a screenshot at a busy counter.

Purpilot sends payment links through WhatsApp when clients book. The money goes directly to your own account. Purpilot never holds or touches it. You check the payment in your own account, then tap YES on WhatsApp, and only then does the client get their confirmation. A screenshot is never proof.

No screenshots accepted. No guessing at the counter. No scammer can get a confirmed booking without a real payment going through. See how Purpilot works →
